What does anxiety really feel like?
Anxiety feels like you are stuck in endless loops of "what if" scenarios and always imagine the worst-case scenario.
Anxiety feels like a tightness all over your body. You are stiff and unable to relax. You struggle to breathe deeply and you cannot "switch off".
Anxiety feels like your have no control over you rmind and thoughts. You are always thinking/ planning/ probelm solving for future problems. Even if you have a plan in your mind, you still cannot relax.
Anxiety feels like you are always plannig how to avoid worst-case scenarios and solve problems that are not even problems yet.
Anxiety feels like inability to fall asleep or stay asleep for as long as you would like. Worries might wake you up at 3am and you are unable to stop them.
Anxiety feels like it is impossible to rationalise.
You don't have to experience ALL of the symptoms, but if you find that you experience some of them on most days, then anxiety might be taking over your mind and stopping you from living your life.
Anxiety may vary in intensity based on other factors, and a lot of the time, it can come and go as the triggers arise.
Learning how to cope with anxiety, however, will give you the tools you need to feel more in control all of the time.
What to expect from therapy:
Anxiety is one of the most common mental health conditions in the United Kingdom, with nearly 1 in 3 people meeting the diagnostic criteria for an anxiety disorder at some point in their lives. Decades of research and the NICE guidance for care excellence recommend cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) as a first-line treatment.
CBT is a structured form of therapy that helps you identify and change the unhelpful thoughts and behaviours that keep you feeling anxious.
CBT for anxiety is more than just talking. It’s more like working with a personal trainer. The aim of this approach is for you to learn and practise skills that are directly related to your individual needs.
Some of the skills that you will learn with CBT
Self-monitoring: You learn to track your own feelings, thoughts, and behaviours so you can better understand what is happening and what you want to change.
Challenging anxious thoughts: Instead of accepting every anxious thought as true, you learn to question whether it is accurate or helpful and consider alternative perspectives.
Mindfulness: You learn how to notice your thoughts without judging them, which is the opposite of the automatic, critical thinking that often happens with anxiety.
